I paint directly from the subject, whether in the context of still life in the studio, or in the field en plein aire. I find this process to be the most visually nourishing and sets challenges which realise and enhance the skills which make good paintings.
My work is figurative and impressionistic, exploring still life and landscape. I paint exclusively in oils. The motifs are concerned with the unremarkable objects and perceptions that exist in the passage of daily life; the items and our surroundings we see but often do not notice. The enjoyment of my paintings is about the time taken to invest in the pleasure of seeing; of realising and defining perceptions. As I develop as an artist I seek to understand the handling of paint in order that I can make my subjects resonate in the moment in which they exist.
